did the people of america get asked by it's government if it was ok to go to war in Iraq, or is it just acting like they accuse the Chinese of doing, being a military dictatorship and do as they want to? seems to me they should have had a vote on it if it is a true democracy yes or no?

Now finally a question that is worth answering.

I have read through the earlier answers and must sadly admit that the people answering before me haven't really thought about it, hell, some haven't even tried to do so.

It definitely was a democracy to begin with. During the years of operating that democracy, it has declined in quality and value. When you read what our founding fathers have written, not only in the constitution, but written in general, you get a good feeling of the mood of the times. Of their intentions, their mindset and what they have planned for this country to be. The words "Land of the free" wasn't just a catchy phrase they cajoled at baseball games. They knew what they meant when they said it.

As with all system that run for number of years, men will come up with ideas to change the system to their advantage. The greed we see today so openly is around since many years and those possessing (or shall i say being possessed by) the greed decided that democracy stands in their way of amassing more and more money and more and more power. They decided to introduce changes over the years and decades. The changes are subtle and go widely unnoticed, but have a lasting effect on the ship we call democracy. Over the years the ship has become heavy and leaky. It wasn't maintained anymore and refurbished, but left to rot in some murky harbor called elite partisanship.

Today our democracy is dying. The leaks are so large that the ship is sinking and the captains are burning up the sails in order to dry their wets.

The American democracy is dead.

america. Democratic status. changed into the source of the debate at Valley Forge. The founding fathers were democratic. the individuals who needed a republic merely about starved the completed American military out to educate their aspect. Then it changed into set up as a democracy for the individuals and Thomas Jefferson ended up speaking plenty about it. Then those losers talked about as the puratins got here in, representing the republic (massive agencies). They fought for merely about 100 years to opposite the structure and all the equivalent rights stuff. Now you word it, they nonetheless attempt to make it a nazi or king james state. yet maximum of what they have achieved is public. because of their joker mentality, now many huge economic marketplace depending entities have more advantageous means then human beings and extremely contradict what united states stands for. united states is meant to be a democracy, yet because of the corrupt idiots who took unrestrained moves. some such issues because the federal authorities. even although they seem to be a company. As a ruling body. it truly is only a mish mash of solid human beings and grimy those who help company over human beings.

Look at the voting record of the representatives in office at the time of the war. Overwhelmingly, US representation affirmed the need and justification for invasion.

If you wanted a referendum, you would have likely received one in March 2003, for the US population was staunchly supportive of removing Saddam from power (which they should have been, and are in the right now, as he is on trial).

The Chinese KILL those who dissent, does the US do that? The Chinese tankroll over protestors or send them off to make cocktail umbrellas in lice-infested rathole cemeteries for the soon-to-die, our convicts get CONJUGAL visits and fan mail!

You sound like you wouldn't know a true democracy if it sat in your lap. Pray the Chinese don't impose their version of government where YOU live.

America is not a democray. its a country of the "haves", and "have not's". the ethnic,so called "black people or the Hispanics, and other races are second class citizens. the country is divided like most other countries by the rich and the poor. their is very little provision for welfare, if you cannot afford to pay you don't get. the country is enveloped by criminal business who appear to be legitimate on the surface but are running tax evasion schemes that corrupt the very essence of so called democracy.

Yes, at home, USA is democracy but not forget what the government has done to minority Muslim, Black and Red Indians. The government treat them like hell.
The white man like KKK have previledge to take terrorist action against minority.
In Foreign Policy, USA is very bad country since she acting like a dictactor Hitler ordering UN and all countries what they suppose to do and dont. No democracy in this area. See yourself in the world news. especially in nuke issue in Iran. USA can make a false report to IAEA regarding the Iran capability of nuke war head eventhough USA and Israel have already thousands of nuke war heads.
Yes, USA is a democracy state TO KILL another countries.

No.It doesn't really matter who is President, the money-men control the country. They contribute to all the candidates fighting for election,so no matter who wins, they are owed favours, there is always a pay-back.Voting is just a sham. All American Presidents are from the Right,a Leftist President would not be tolerated by the money-men.

America could be a democracy, but for that to happen people have to become aware of the prevailing plutocracy.

in a broad understanding of democracy maybe, but in some aspect of thier policy maybe not democratic, u.s. is insisting on sanction here and there, the u.s. insisting that the people change their system, they should democratise. the u.s. even sometimes just ignores the sanctity of borders. this kind of thing,of course does make the rest of the world very uncomfortable.

The United States is not and never has been a pure democracy. It is a representative republic, or a democratic republic, where representatives are electived (the democracy part) to make decisions for us.
