There are no advantages of programming in java for a programmer. But there are advantages of programming in java for managers. Let me explain. If you use a language that does not try to fit-you into iron clad syntax/types then two things can happen
(1) A good programmer will exhibit lot of individuality in their codes
(2) Bad programmers will write very bad spaghetti code

Point no. (2) is responsible for all the myths related to perl etc. Point(1) is also a head-ache for managers because code written by good folks can not be understood my mediocre people.

This is where the advantages of programming in java kicks in. everyone looks the same. There is lot of safety type wise and even when you abuse the language you abuse it in terms of classes/interfcaes so the code is more or less understandable.( exception : when lousy people coming from c background write java code) The library is standarized. so maintenance wise it is good.
Being object oriented certainly helps on big projects. But that is not the only thing. see there are C projects of bigger magnitudes executed successfully. So a lot also depends on who is coding.
To conclude
advantage # 1 ) bad coders can not abuse that bad especially when compared to languages that give you lot of freedom
advantage #2) good coders can take advantage of OO principles.
advantage#3) Good for managers. large user base and libraries, so more standarized. All morons know it so no dearth of porgrammers as well.
