I am 31 weeks and everyone keeps saying I am big for 31 weeks. I have just come home from hospital where baby was on fetal monitor and I heard 2 heartbeats. 1 was 125bpm the other 145bpm. Is it possible for me to be carrying twins or was one the cord or something? They both went up during contractions. Can this be missed at this stage in pregnancy?

Congradulations on the up coming birth! But I don't think that the doctors would miss a second baby...but then again we are all only human. BUT you would have higher levels of hormones and other indications of twins. It might be that you kind of want twins and are hoping for it. As for looking bigger than others, that could just be your baby is really bigger than others or the position. Just think of this as a Christmas present and once you have the baby in your arms you'll be thankful it's only one!

I just had twins. They are 2 months old. Before I had an exam the doctor said it seemed like I was a month further along. When they did the ultrasound they discovered both babies. Sometimes the monitors can pick up an echo or the mother's heartbeat. If you've had an ultrasound, I'm sure they would have already picked up twins. They can detect twins within the first month. At 31 weeks, they should have seen twins by now. Are you really big or just have a couple of extra pounds? By 4 months, I already looked like I was 11 months pregnant. I out grew my maternity clothes at 5 months. If you're considerably bigger, there's always a slim chance.

At 31 weeks I am sure the doctor would have told you that you were carrying twins if that was the case. If he told you there was two heart beats then you are having twins but if he just said that he can hear a heart beat and it keeps fluctuating between 125 and 145bpm then its one.

What ever happened you should have asked for clarification. It is something you need to know so that you can prepare yourself. It is hard enough caring for one child but to be in the dark about having twins till the last minute will be a nightmare.

In this day and age it would be highly unlikely for them to miss twins if you are having routine prenatal care. It is much more common to have a hidden baby with higher order multiples (triplets, etc.). An ultrasound can confirm twins very early in pregnancy. Also, your test results for many routine blood tests during pregnancy would also indicate to your doctor that you might be carrying twins. You most likely heard your own heartbeat, and it would most likely rise with contractions.

Redbubble , why didn't you ask.
At this stage of your pregnancy the medical staff should have a fair idea whether you are having twins, although I was carrying twins a few years ago and when I lost them about 15 weeks they actually found I was carrying triplets....What ever the out come good luck Sweetie. Just take good care of your self.
Let everyone know on yahoo what you have , Please.
Good luck

Sounds to me like you're having twins. Sometimes one baby will hide the other for a while. Your doctor should of done a better ultra sound or exam to make sure. Congrats! Hope all is well.

I don't know. I would think that they would be able to tell by now. Is it possibly that the other heartbeat was yours? Just asking.

Anything is possible, however I am sure you have had an ultrasound and bloodwork...those are excellent detectors of multiple pregnancies.
