which is rather better live or dry moss in making bandages?

Bandage? If you're trying to air layer a plant (cause it to root while still attached to the mother plant) use damp sphagnum moss wrapped around the stem. Cover that with clear plastic and tape or twist tie the ends so the moss doesn't dry out. When you see roots through the plastic you can cut the stem below the plastic and pot the top.

If you mean bandage for yourself, dry moss would work. You don't want to keep a wound wet.
