why is the word abbrevition not short?

It's from the Latin BREVIS "short" and a shorter form of a word, but more particularly, an abbreviation is a letter or group of letters, taken from a word or words, and employed to represent them for the sake of brevity.

So the latin word is actually short, but the English form creates a longer version which can be abbreviated :)

Arthur Shuttleworth, who's job it was to Concoct Abbreviations, was retired before he got to that point in the dictionary. And, due to their fiscal predicament, Arthur was not replaced that year, nor the year after ...and in the course of time, his position was still one listed as a 'Vacancy.' And over the course of decades it has remain so as Arthur's role was forgotten about.

As no one was appointed as the 'Abbreviation Man,' no further work was undertaken in that area. And, hence we find ourselves in the terrible predicament we find ourselves in today.

In short we cut the word like samantha becomes sam we ignore the other word. but abberivation keeps orignal message alive like asap as soon as possible. we can expand this word. but you dont have any idea what is after sam if you does not know her personally. it can be samual also.

Theres not reason. It was not meant to be charactoristic of its meaning. Its like saying 'why doesnt the word MAN look like a real man'
