We have custody of our granddaughter and would not have it any other way now. She is close to my heart, not to take anything away from my other grandchildren. Love them all. Something special about raising this young girl that did not ask to come into this world and be treated the way she was from the person that gave birth to her.

Yes, generally the raising of one's kids belong to that of the parent(s), however, sometimes things happen that makes it next to impossible for parents to assume responsibility (or not). I'll use myself as an example, because for the most part, my son was raised by my parents, even though I was also in the same house. Sometimes though, when I'd want to take my son to the park or whatever, my mother would fight me on it and that just made things harder. For the longest time, after my parents died, my son still felt I was more of a friend than a mother, so motherhood was never part of my serious repertoire, and that bothered me alot. My sister-in-law tries to tell me things that I supposedly did shortly after I had my son, like not breast-feeding him (not that I didn't try, just couldn't). Stuff like this, the negativity coming from everyone made it tough for me to step up and take responsibility. It was almost like my parents wouldn't let me be a mother.

My son and I now have a relatively good mother-son relationship finally. I'm still learning. Sometimes I get melancholy and down, feeling like I screwed up somewhere, but I don't know where. I am very grateful my parents were there to help me. In the long run, they raised my son, I took care of them. Strange story, but that's how it was.

Some parents have no business trying to be parents.

Maybe this wasn't what you were looking for and I'm sorry, but yet, needed to share that.
