We have most assuredly been conditioned. I think it is unfair to lay the blame solely on the media. Our culturally conditioning is the prism through which we analyze all of our perceptions. This is partly through family values, which cover a wider range than most people imagine. It is also a function of our educational system. And of the books we happen to run across. And the desire to fit in, and be part of the group. Religion plays a large role in many peoples lives, but even in the USA, Chrisitanity means much different things to people of different denominations.
The media is simply a business. They must have their suppliers and their consumers. Some people feel that CNN is a reliable source, while other may vehemently insist that FOX is the only reliable source. But neither of those choices really matter.
The more important conditioning has to do with which news makes it into the news. I am an information junkie, so I am exposed to a great deal more about international geopolitics than others. However, in some countries, the media is strictly controlled. Media either has a bias to get the most listeners or readers, or it has a bias to have their reporters physically survive, or in some cases, take benefits to promote a specific issue. In the USA, a primary benefit is access. I someone speaks ill of a politician, and has no constituency, that writer will be cut out of the loop.
There is so much news information out there, someone, somewhere has to make a decision about what to cover and what to leave out. This is called defining the terms of the dialog.
No, media is a tool. Our(USA) educational system has let us down by not teaching the trivium first. Grammar, Rhetoric and Logic. If the students were to master those, they could have the tools to apply critical thinking.
You have just begun to ask the right question, and I wish you well in your own endeavors and in encouraging others to look for the original source materials, and to evaluate the veracity and biases of the original sources.
Good Luck, we can take our civilization back, and build an even better one, if we only try.

Yes. The media's our only source for news, so either we have to believe it or find another source. There is distortion in some cases and it makes us oblivious of what's really going on, but we can't really do anything about it unless people start boycotting it or something.
P.S. I think people are smart enough to know when they're being lied to. I also think that they're intelligent enough to point out bias from fact.

Absolutely yes!
I started my quest as a ghost political write in the 90s. With this quest I had to do lots and lots of research from many differing media sources.
I've listened to Rush, watched Cross Fire, CSpan... you name it and I have watched or listened to it...
Of all the media sources I figured out after time and much examination that PBS was the most neutral and fair factual news.
I honestly feel sorry for ... what ... 95% of Americans... that are caught up in what they see as fact. It is distressing.
PS Bush tried to get his hands on PBS last year with some legislation but thank God it failed; although, he did cut the funding.

You're having trouble putting together a coherent sentence. The media/government has definitely been trying to brainwash people with constant propaganda ever since and probably before 9/11.

Perhaps, but media distortion stems from reporters being too scared to p*** off the government.

No.
Years ago, my class' Social Science teacher gave us some good advice: "Don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see".
The demonstration: He whispered a sentence to a student, had him/her pass it on. You should have heard what the last person said. :)
By the time news stories are aired, who knows what the facts were?
