Pap Smear are fine. Get ready for a cold thing that looks like a duck bill. It is very easy, and takes your doctor maybe 30 seconds to complete from beginning to end. It is not bad at all. A little uncomfortable having a strange person stare at you down there, however, you have to think like they see twenty of these a day. Usually the doctor will tell you everything that they are doing. But,, they will put a little lubricant on the duck bill thing that holds you open, and they take a q-tip...and stick it up there and rub it against the wall of your uterus very lightly, just like a pea tree dish test, and then they put it in a little tube, and take the duck bill thing out, and you are done. Very easy. I think the worst part is when she pushes on your uterus to feel it. That has nothing to do with the pap smear though. There is no pinch, the person above me is thinking if the pap smear comes back positive, then they have to take a biopsy. That is different, there is no pinch.

Shower and clean yourself well. Don't douche though.
Its very similar to a regular pelvic exam, but when the dr puts the speculum in you will feel a bit of pressure. When the dr takes that actual sample you will feel a tiny pinch and its over. If the dr is any good at all he will warm the speculum up for you before inserting.
The sample is usually taken by scraping your cervix wall with a piece of plastic that sort of looks like a square popsicle stick. It really is mostly painless. Relaxation is the key.
I am not thinking of a biopsy which is called a colposcopy. When the sample is taken you will feel a tiny pinch. When a biopsy is done you feel a large pinch.

You won't get snip unless the doc actually sees something suspicious. They just swab the cervix area to remove cells. If it comes back abnormal then you might need a biopsy, which would mean they take a little nip. It's not really so painful, you might feel a little pinch or a more like a cramp. Just try to relax (I know, I know, whatever!).

I wonder if you need one: Current recommendations are to start getting Paps at age 21 or 3 years after your 1st sexual intercourse, whichever comes first.
Regardless, when you see your doctor, ask him/her for the Gardasil vaccine to protect you against HPV (the nasty virus that makes Pap smears necessary...)
I'll let the ladies who have actually experienced a Pap smear tell you what it's like :^)

Within 48 hours before the pap smear you should not douche, have intercourse. Do not use tampons spermicides vaginal lubricants or feminine deodorant sprays or powers. These activities could irritate the cervix, avoiding them helps ensure collection of an edequate cell sample.

The prep is more mental than anything else. Don't have sex, douche, or use tampons. Basically, don't put anything inside. Just be washed and wear clean socks (since your feet are in the DR's face.). Relax as much as possible. Tensing up makes it really uncomfortable. Also, if it hurts, speak up. there are different size speculums.
