Dudes, this is worth 10% of my grades. If I fail this thing, then I go down one full letter grade. I want to make sure I've got the right answers.

Nine men earned in a certain time $1334.40. If one recieved $20.00, others $15.00, and the rest $5.40 for an hour's work, how long did they work?

I think that those three [$20, $15, and $5.40] are hourly rates, all of them, not just $5.40.

I would appreciate it. A lot. Please help. I need it. I luff you.

That IS the entire problem. Everything my teacher wrote for the problem is there.

And I DID ask my parents for help. There are 2 problems on the page, and my dad helped me with the second problem. My mom is Japanese, and she doesn't know what anything technical is in English. My dad doesn't remember much from high school.

I've been on this same problem for an hour and I think I'm about to cry.

Oh yeah, the answer is also supposed to be a whole number. Like they worked for 5 hours, not 5 and a fourth.

An answer:

One makes $20
5 make $15
3 make $5.40
They work for 12 hours

$1334.40 = (20t + 5*15t + 3*5.4t)
t = time = 12 hours

20t + 15t(8-x) + 5.4tx = 1334.4
20t + 90t - 15tx + 5.4tx = 1334.4
110t - 9.6tx = 1334.4
t(110-9.6x) = 1334.4
x = # of workers making $5.40

or

20t + 15tx+ 5.4t(8-x) = 1334.4
20t + 15tx + 43.2t - 5.4tx = 1334.4
78t + 9.6tx = 1334.4
t(78 + 9.6x) = 1334.4
x = # of workers making $15.00

Still working on it...
20 + 5*15 + 3*5.4 = 109

One makes $20
5 make $15
3 make $5.40
They work for 12 hours

I am assuming there are three persons at work. Let us say the three persons worked for x , y , z hours respectively.Then we have the equation
20x+15y+5.40z=1334.40. ....................(1)
Our task is to determine x,y,z by inspection.
Let us first of all get rid of the decimal on the right hand side by multiplying through out by 10.We now have
200x+150y+54z=13344 .......................(2)

Look at the first two terms on the left hand side.No matter what x , y are the result can only have zero in the unit's place. So , 4 on the right in eq(2) can only come from the third term ie 54z.Quite obviously, z should be either one or eleven. Let us see if 11 works.
With z=11 , 54 z would be 594.Eq(20) now reduces to
200x+150y=13344-594
=12750.
Divide by 10:
20x+15y=1275......................(3)
Clearly 5 in the unit's place on the right can only come from the term 15x.
If we put x=60 and y=3, eq(3) is satified.
so finally we have the answer. The 20 dollar person worked for 60 hours, the 15 dollar person for three hours and the 5.40 person for 11 hours.The answer i , as the problem stands, is not unique.Frankly , I do not know how to fit in nine people. We probably would need an extra condition,May be you should post the answer your teacher gives.

if you have any problem you can send me a personal email.( I have permitted that.)All the best

1334.4=20t+15at+5.4bt
where t = # of hours
a = men at 15/hour
b = men at 5.4/hour
a=8-b
1334.4=20t+15t(8-b)+5.4bt
1334.4=20t+120t-15bt+5.4bt
1334.4=140t-9.6bt
1334.4=t(140-9.6b)
t=12 hours when b=3
1334.4=20(12)+15(5)(12)+5.4(3)(12)
1334.4=240+900+194.4
1334.4=1334.4

so it works for t=12 hours.
i do believe that the question is missing something. it is missing some form of input. like maybe the number of people earning 15 bucks an hour. when i read the question it actually reads as if a number is missing from there. so what i did is: once i got this equation 1334.4=t(140-9.6b) i substituted the value of 1 then 2 then 3 until i got an whole number answer. it is a ong way of doing things but since in your additional info you say that it has to be a whole number answer and i know that b had to be a whole number and i knew it was less than 8 it was the only way i could think of.

i hope this info helps

To figure this out you add up the three wages 20.00+15.00+5.40= 40.40. Then you divide the total by this number 1334.40/40.40=33.02970297 ===> This is the number of hours worked total. So the answer is 33.02970297 or rounded off 33.0298

in that case. add the "presumed" hourly rates. use it as a divisor from what they earned... you'll get the hours they've worked...
