well, after you have cleaned it (vinegar works well...and is a natural disinfectant)....when it is dried...sprinkle heavily with baking soda...it absorbs odors...I used to use it for my cat...that could never seem to make it to her box....it REALLY helped...after you put on baking soda...let it stay (maybe even overnite) if it really smells....then vacum it up....that should do it...good luck!

I hope you all feel better soon! If I could, I'd send my dog over - its really gross but he will lick up any sick if he gets to it before I do. Try using White vinegar and a bit of water sponged in to the carpet as it is antibacterial/antiseptic, so even though it is odorless when it dries, it might help neutralise the vomit smell.
Its probably not much help to you right now, poor thing, but in New Zealand you can buy carpet wipes at the supermarket. So handy, they come in a pouch just like baby wipes, they're made of quite strong fabric and are quite moist and nice smelling. THey foam up the carpet without needing water or anything else, great for those times when you want to clean something up QUICK!

Never use a chemical on your carpet, use an enzymatic cleaner. I've spilled coffee, tea, red wine, dog vomit, etc. on my carpets. All I do is mix the oxiclean with the hottest tap water available, pour on stain (a cup or so of the solution), let sit for 30 minutes. Blot up and rinse with hot tap water. Blot again and rinse again. Put a white bath towel over the stain, pile a couple of heavy hardbound books on the towel and let sit overnight or 24 hours. Stain should come up by a wicking action as the spot dries.

Just clean it up best as you can for now and concentrate on getting everyone well again. Later on you can get a Rug Doctor machine from the supermarket and clean it properly.

Rug Doctor Odor Remover. Wherever carpet cleaners are rented, you can find odor remover by any brand. You can use it with the machine or use it alone.
