Let the sponge dry.. but before you do that toss it into your microwave for about 30 to 45 seconds.. I read somewhere that doing this will kill some of the bacteria.. or if you have a dishwasher toss it onto the top rack and let it go through the cycle with your dishes.. this will also help kill some of the bacteria

Let it dry. If you have a dishwasher store it inside when not in use. Stand it up between prongs. When you run the dishwasher leave the sponge in there to be cleaned and sanitized. You can also sanitize by microwaving a damp sponge about 15 seconds.

It is better to keep it dry because I have noticed from personal experience is that a lot of times the sponge starts to smell bad.

Dry. Wet sponges and rags are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, fungi and mold. If it has any of these things growing on it it will proably smell sour. Soak your sponges in bleach water periodically to kill the monsters.

I have always hated how my dish sponge smells musty even when left out to dry after washing dishes. So I heard once to either put it in the dishwasher (which if I had one I wouldn't need a sponge, duh!) so I put my wet sponge in the microwave for about 5 seconds and no more!! and leave out to dry and it will kill the bacteria that make it smell musty!!!

you definitely want it dry. although it would be better to use cloth that way you can wash it regularly. thinking on the bacteria side, you really do not want to keep a sponge b/c there's no telling what nasty things are lurking around in there. man, then when you use the sponge, it gets spread around and mh, mh, mh! take heed. bacteria is no punk!
peace

Definitely dry, less chance of it smelling really manky after a while! I put mine in the wash with my towels too.
Whoever said put it in the microwave just reminded me - putting your toothbrush in the dish washer is supposed to be great to keep it clean. Haven't tried it myself though

Make sure you have rinsed it out well. Let it dry to keep bacteria from growing. I throw mine in the wash with my kitchen towels occasionally.
