The Patriots were brave men and women who found a way to make a better country and were bold enough to tell King George III of England in their Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Then they fought a war of independence, risking their lives, fortunes and their children's well-being for five years to get their independence. They were smart enough to ask France for help, and even smarter to not become a colony of France in the process. They won the war, called the American Revolution, and set up the first true democracy of the modern era, and the most successful one since ancient Greece.

After the war, the Patriots became Founders of the United States of America.

The only reason that Patriots are "better" than Tories is that if it weren't true, the Revolutionary War would have been a complete mistake. The nation was closely divided and in many areas, the Tories held power. Both sides showed roughly equal cruelty to the other when in power. Many Tories fled with the British when they withdrew after the Treaty of Versailles. From there, the ability of the Patriots to craft and implement the U. S. Constitution is proof of their merit.

I don't know that one was better than the other. It all depends on your point of view. The Patriots were fighting FOR U.S. independence, and the Tories were loyal to the crown. They believed that the colonies should continue to try to work through the proper channels to achieve representation. About 100,000 Loyalists (another name for Tories) left the U.S. for Canada and other parts of the British Empire after the Revolution.
