Barry Sanders, hands down. If he was on a better team, and he didn't retire young, he'd be so far ahead of everyone else on the all time rushing yards list it wouldn't be a competition. Jim Brown has a similar arguement with the retiring young, but Sanders did it in a modern era, where defenses were smarter, faster, stronger, and downright better than they were when Brown played. Here is my list of top RBs ever
1. Barry Sanders
2. Jim Brown
3. Walter Payton
4. O.J. Simpson
5. Gale Sayers
6. Bo Jackson
7. Marcus Allen
8. Eric Dickerson
9. Marchall Faulk
10. Emmitt Smith (I hate to say it Cowboy fans, but he just wasn't that skilled, he was a little lucky, and a little surrounded by HOFers)

1. Barry Sanders, because he would set every NFL rushing record right now, if Sanders had the same number of seasons played as Payton.
2. Jim Brown
3. Walter Payton
4. Emmitt Smith
5. Terrell Davis

Emmit Smith, Every great running back has had a good offence. line at some point in time. Emmit played smart, he played on a 1 and 15 team. He played a playoff game against the Giants gained well over 100 yards with a seperated sholder. He did not quit, like Sanders. Sanders could have went to a better team.

Jim Brown #1. Most yards per carry.
Walter Payton #2 best all around back. Could do it all.
Barry Sanders #3 Most exciting runner ever.
#4 would be sayers. And if he hadn't been injured could have been the best ever.

I have to go with Payton, with Jim Brown being a close second.
Payton was a complete back; runner, receiver, could play quick, fast and powerful.
Brown was a man among boys in his era and could've been even more so if he hadn't walked away early.
Emmitt was a quality back but was the product of a great line.
O.J. could, er, cut and slash with the best of 'em. *snicker*

without question the great Jim Brown. He played when their were 12 game schedules, no passing game to speak of so defenses loaded up to stop the run, and with fewer teams then only the very best made it to the n.f.l. He went out on top and could have played several more years and set the bar to be unreachable if he wanted

Tough question, bro! Jim Brown was a little before my time, but from the films I've seen of him and from the stats I've read, he dominated during the time he played like no one else. Sweetness had the quickness and speed and knack to find the hole, but not alot of power. The Bus was a pure power back. So, to me, best-ever runningback means a combo of all the great traits: speed, savvy, and power. With this in mind I gotta go with Barry Sanders.
