Pitchers.
A great hitting team with bad pitchers never go very far in a season, and go nowhere in the post season. A poor hitting team w/ great pitching is in every game and has won championships.

I think a good case can be made for catcher, they are the ones running things out there. In many cases the catcher is the heart and soul of the team.
However I am going with an answer that I never would have thought of before this season. Center Field, that right Center field. A good Center Fielder makes the difference between a 1 or 2 run game or a 4 or 5. After cringing every time Ozzie put Mackowiak into center and watching line drives fly over his head I eralized how much a great center fielder can improve a team. Look at players like Torri Hunter, Aaron Rowand, Coco Crisp, Johnny Damon (even thought he has no arm), and perhaps the best defensive center fielder this season Gary Matthews Jr. A great Centerfielder makes a huge difference in a team.

Without a doubt it's the pitcher. There are dozens of teams that have been great hitting teams that have never won a world series. Why?? No pitching. Just look at this years White Sox. Best Hitting team in baseball, even had better stats hitting than last years champion team, but they aren't even going to make the playoffs. Why? Because they're pitching is allowing about 1 more run per game. Same lineup except for Thome who hit over 40 homers and they will be sitting on the couch in october.

The catcher is the most important...he calls the game, has to know what every batter's tendencies are, and has to know what his pitcher's strength's are to each hitter.
Without a solid catcher, teams can steal bases constantly...the pitcher is not in sync, etc.
The manager & his coaches are the brains, but the catcher is the most important position on a team.

the most important POSITION is catcher. Its often said that the position player which would make the best manager is the catcher. Why? Because they have to know the game the best. The pitcher throws the ball, but its up to the catcher as to what pitch he throws. Catcher has to know whats the best thing to do in every situation. He controls the game

Middle relief......plenty of closers that can go 1 or maybe 2 tops innings...mostly one......but the "set up" man is the most important player....got to get it to "Mariano" or "Hoffman" but without this "set-up" man there will not be a save.......when the Yankees had Mariano as a set up for Wettland...that was a combo from "Elm street" for the opponents......since then the Yankees have barely...actually not managed and thus no Championships........."the middle relief" is the answer!

That would depend on the team actually. if your the Boston red sox then Catcher is the most important position (look what happened when he went down), if your the Phillies Second Base is the most important position. it all depends on your teams need and the player playing that position. anyone can play catcher for the red sox but are they as good as he is probable not.

The Catcher. He directs the pitcher and moves position players for the batter coming up. He also has to check runners at each base and try to throw out someone stealing.
