The bulletin boards at school are encased in boxes of clear plastic. However, the plastic has been badly scratched and it's hard to see the articles on the board inside. It would cost $400 to replace, which we can't afford. Is there something we could do to fix this?

First clean the plastic with mild streak free cleaner and a soft bristle brush. Do not use paper towels or rags as the lint will get stuck in the sharp edges of the scratches. Then use alcohol to remove any oils. Use the bristle brush to push the alcohol from top to bottom then blot up (do not wipe) the puddle you've just made with a paper towel. It's OK to let the alcohol on the main part of the panel evaporate but the puddle contains all the oils and needs to be removed. If you can take the door panels off and lay them flat, brush on a thin coat of a clear acrylic. The acrylic will flow into and fill up the scratches and make them disappear. If any of the gouges are particularly deep, spot fill them first. Build up the gouge with several thin layers of acrylic until it is even with the surrounding surface. Then overcoat the entire panel as above. If you have to do the panel while hanging, use a clear nail polish to fill deep scratches and let dry. Then spray the panel with a clear acrylic spray. I have used Krylon Crystal with good results. It will not be perfect but you'll be able to read through it again and save $400 for a few years.

I had the same problem with scratches on my motorcycle windshield. You can find a few different products to fill in scratches on plastic/plexiglass at most local automotive parts stores. They are "PlastiX", "ScratchX", and "Mirror Shine", among others. I think the ScratchX is more suited for scratches on clear coat paint jobs, but the PlastiX should work great on the plexi. Try it out, it is under $10 and will save you lots of money!

wet sanding. kits available at automotive shops although they may be available at home depot, etc. this is one way at least. instructions on some kits as for the clearing up the plastic coating on some headlights on automobiles. wet sanding is also used in finishing the clearcoat on your automobile paint jobs.

although the 400 dollars may seem like a bargain after wet sanding a bulletin board... lol... :o)

You can use very fine wire wool and furniture polish.
Rub the wire wool in small circles over the scratches.
This makes finer marks that will eliminate the visible ones!
