The best book written on this subject is "The Art of Colour and Design" by Maitland Graves. It is now out of print [I think] but should be available from a good library. It has everyrhing you would need to know about the principles of good design. These are not "style" but universal principles that exist in all design. Style is the way in which these principles are employed. Reading this book will give you an idea of how to interpret design elements
and use them to create original and successful design.

Arthur Wesley Dow said that the artist works with line, value, and color, composing these elements to create symmetry, repetition, unity, transition, and subordination. These all can be controlled by the artist to achieve harmonious relationships.

Most art professors would say that the principles of organization or design consist of harmony, variety, balance, proportion, dominance, movement, and economy.

The elements of art are line, shape, value, texture, and color and they are applied to the principles of organization to create space that may create unity of an overall work of art.

If it looks right, it is right
BUT
you must have the eye to see that it does look right.
Some are born with this talent or ability
others have to be taught.
My guess is that this principle applies to all branches of art and design.
Anyone disagree?
