My parents were divorced when I was 9 and I heard voices and began having heart pounding panic attacks. The voices stopped but the panic attacks continued and turned into hyperventilation panic attacks. I even became agoraphobic, my parents had to drag me out of the house.I had a bout of OCD as well handwashing for a certain amount of time, counting sins I had made within the day and saying a prayer for each one at the end.I wound up on a lot of different meds after a 2 month stay at the local psych hospital for children who did drugs ( which I didn't I was 13 ) . I still have problems not as many but some till this day.Could a thing like divorce set that off ?

divorce can be a traumatic thing to a child of any age. It is common for kids and even older children of couples that get divorced to have it effect them in some emotional way. You may have a doctor look at it from the angle of Post-Traumatic Stress syndrome. But you were also going through physical life changes as well and starting to get hormones and going into puberty. These may have contributed to the level at which the divorce effected you and may have contributed to the things you described.

ABSOLUTELY!!! Divorce usually rocks a child's world and can destroy their sense of security and how they view the world :( Unfortunately, divorce will never go out of style and children are always the ones affected the most! Parents who divorce should always remember one thing, the love for their child/children should be stronger than their anger at their spouse and that no matter what, the children deserve the best from both parents :)

Certainly. I'm very sorry your mind chose those things to fill the void that was left by your parents separation. I've heard plenty of stories similar to yours, and most ended badly. I'll just say don't give up or get disparaged. There's always a solution to your problems, no matter how dire they seem. Patience is very important. Learn to have more and you'll see your problems slowly going away.

Sure. It's a very traumatic experience for a child. For example, counting sins could be related to a child's tendency to blame themselves for their parents' divorce.

Preposterous! No negative effects have ever been observed as a result of divorce.
