I hear some really amazing stuff from overseas (Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, The Gathering, Theatre of Tragedy, Within temptation, After Forever) featuring female vocalists. The US music scene -at least the mass market arena- seems to have no room or interest in females outside of country and pop. Overall the american music martket seems really insulated from the rest of the world music scene, probably because the US record companies don't completely control it so it's kept out. Thank god for the internet!

*beck* -You couldn't be more wrong. Probably your definition of 'rock' is very narrow and defined by corporate radio. Check out some of the groups up top there. They play on the strengths of the females' voices. Do they growl and shreik like some guy-fronted bands? No. (thought there are some that do) But they sound good nonetheless. Expand your horizons, dude. You'll be a better person for it.

You're right--- it's because of mass music and big Corporate Radio. They're not in business to promote art. They're in business to sell music. Teenagers are willing to spend a lot more of their money on music than grown-ups are if you break it down into percentages (when was the last time you saw an adult spend 80% of their money on music?). And girls are a lot more likely to spend money on music than guys, especially when it comes to live shows and all the crap you can buy at the concert. Boys just don't get all screamy and giggly and won't "die" if they don't get to go to the show but try telling a 14-year-old girl she's gonna miss whatever the current boy-band is and she'll throw herself in front of a train. Anyway, since teenage girls are the ones spending the money, the record companies make a product that teenage girls want to buy. There's definitely some exceptions but that's where the majority of music comes from. And that's also why so few artists these days are around for more than a couple of years--- always a fresh crop of marginally talented poppy sing-songy acts to sell to the kids who aren't old enough to be spending their money on gas or rent.

I'm a real big fan of female rock stars. Michelle Branch, Barlowgirl, and Superchick are pretty awesome. Don't worry, prejudices will fade.

Men won't let them in. Its a business same as other businesses that try to keep women out.
When women try to join bands most of the guys just want to have sex with her than afterwards are intimidated by a woman that may have talent.

Because, in general, females tend to be pretty $#it at singing rock. They sound weak and strained. Guys voices are just suited much better to rock than females. Of course there are exceptions, but all in all guys are just better than girls at singing rock, and writing rock, in my opinion.
