At Legoland today we saw some lady hitting a 2-3 yr old boy, her was yelling "mommy, mommy" and she was yelling at him "your mother is on the ride, stop it..." as she sqeezed him onto her lap and smacked his legs.
Everyone was staring, saying what if the parents don't know, and when the parents came out of the ride the lady rolled the kid up to them, said something and went to go sit far away from them. The adults were all talking to the boy who still couldn't breathe from all the crying and my Mom went up to them and said "I just want you to know the baby is crying because he got a pretty bad spanking -- we don't know if that's a relative or nanny or friend but she was really hitting him a lot."
And they went ballistic! Actually the husband was holding the boy looked upset / embarrased, but the women yelled "none of your business, we spank, we can spank all we want -- that's his grandma -- how dare you.... what do you care, butt out"
Should my mom have said anything?

I wouldn't have. This was just an ill advised and improperly delivered spanking.
As a kid a couple times my Mom hauled me into the ladies room and gave me a pretty good spanking. These days I would never do that--I'd be afraid of what people would say and also there is a real risk of the police getting involved. I just say "I owe you a spanking"--and that is reedemable once we get home.
Although I do believe in spanking-I don't think it should be done in front of the general public, it should not be done in frustration and out of anger, and only the rear should be swatted.
But even though this was sorry example of ineffective parenting I do not think it was serious enough for other people to stick their nose into it.

Yes. She was right to speak up. She may or may not have been right about the that situtation with the limited info but she was right to speak up.
All animals smack their young. That is not in question. A really good parent only has to do it once.Humans need to too. But there is a time and place. When and where is the parents call. But if they are on the edge of over use of the hand, your mom's challenge may help the kid next time.
Parks are hard places and traps. Too much effort is place on "more fun" instead of enough fun. Your mom was most likely wittnessing a tired Grandma and kid with low blood sugar trying to cram in a little more ' fun' into an expensive day.
Your Mom did good. Send her back in over and and over. I would hug her if I could.

in all good conscience, yes, a sharp slap on the behind to get their attention should be all a spanking ever is .. any other form of striking is abusinve ...hooray for your mom., she did not chastise their practice of discipline, she just informed them and left the disposition up to the parents. she handled it absolutely correctly, kudos to your mom!!

A light slap on the butt may be a form of discipline -- note: "light". Making a child so upset that he/she can't breathe is child abuse and should be reported. Your mother did the the right thing.

There is a huge difference between disipline and abuse when I'm out in public and my son shows his a**,I don't care who sees it I'm going to spank him!If she had walked up to me and said that someone else was spanking my child I would have had to find out what was going on before I got mad but still it wasn't her business anyway!

Yes your mom should have. Next time I suggest calling the police and let them know she just witnessed child abuse

YES - BECAUSE THEIR A TIME, AND A PLACE FOR EVER THING . AND IF YOU FELT AS THOUGH, YOU WERE COMING. ONLY TO HAVE FUN, YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE CHILD HOME. IT'S SUPPOSE TO HAVE BEEN, HIS ENJOYMENT AS WELL. AND IF YOU WERE SO INTO THE RIDE. YOU SHOULD ,HAVE NOT BEAT THE BABY. BUT MAYBE THE MAN, FOR NOT BEING RESPONSIBLE, NOW THAT'S ABUSE. TO BEAT A CHILD FOR NOTHING. BECAUSE HE CAL L'S, YOUR NAME. SOMEONE SHOULD HAD, BEAT HER, FOR BEING SO DUMB. AND THEN CALL THE POLICE.
