Freud said that dreams are the royal road to the unconscious. So, during sleep are defenses are lowered and repressed feelings surface.

But, yes, everything in our dreams is part of ourselves, some aspect.

Also, although people like to hate on Freud, his ideas are the basis for most other theories of personality that are popular today. Some of them took his ideas further, some changed them, and others were a reaction against it. Freud was more creative during periods of his own emotional problems, so that might explain the wackiness to some of his beliefs. The other thing to keep in mind is that Freud's theory is the most comprehensive one for personality and psychotherapy that has ever been developed.

The people in our dreams if recognizable may not be who they are. They may be representative of something or someone else, not necessarily ourselves though.

Freud's book, The Interpretation of Dreams, outlines some of the operations of the unconscious. Because dreams can be remembered and because they are products of the unconscious, they give us a look into a part of ourselves that is otherwise largely inaccessable.

In order to have a full understanding of the world, it is important to understand the nature of the unconscious or what others refer to as the subconscious. Freud's book is long and the writing style is scientific, so it is not the most thrilling book on the market. You might consider giving yourself some sort of reward (Skinner) as you progress through it.

A wonderful article regarding Freud and his discoveries was in Newsweek this past spring. It does discuss the validity of his ideas in light of the new brain research. The article is unbiased. Sometimes people trash Freud these days because they are threatened by him or they are disturbed with his scientific method which was largely lacking. Basically what he came up with were unproven theories based upon observation.

According to Freud, the objects in our dreams are just symbols? They could represent pressing fears, repressed desires, recent memories etc. The method for interpretation is really wide open. Personally, I don't really place to much stake in dreams. I have reality to worry about. And many of the more recent psychological theorists don't place nearly as much emphasis on dreams as Freud did.

That's correct. Everyone you see in your dream is just an aspect of yourself. But, of course, that's only Freud's opinion, and his entire philosophy has been pretty much discounted as worthless over the past century.

Hmmmm... I have dreams about having sex with people. I dreamt I slept with Laura Prepon the other nite. Why her? It could be anyone, right? So in reality I dreamt about sex with MYSELF. Maybe someone told me to go f*** myself that day - so then I dreamt that I actually did.

Love jack

Yes, because you will not dream about that if you are not around. Your dream will always send you a message, negative or positive, as warnings.
