Your problem is not uncommon, specially with old pieces which were varnished. You can try an oil based product it will penetrate into the wood and re-hydrate it and return the color. Go to your local hardware store ie:Home Depot, Ace Hardware or Lowes in the paint, refinishing and restoring dept. and ask for help. There are several new products for wood refinishing and repairing water stains.
Good luck!

First of all, you damaged the finish, not the wood. Something about the heat clouded your finish. If it was along a joint, some hide glue might of melted and seeped out under the finish. The finish might of gotten soft and the heat might of forced water vapor into it. The iron idea is worth a try, and if it doesn't work then you will probably have to refinish it. Hope that it was not the original finish.

easy now sassy! Amrodz, you probably didn't ruin it ( at least not on purpose) Try laying a tea towel over the spots and running a hot iron over it as if you were ironing, don't get in a hurry, check and see if the spots are going away. It will take a lot of heat to damage the finish, so be careful, but not fearful

You had this problem because your table has a nitrocelulosic coating. The only way to solve it is to sand your surface and apply a new coating(it would be best if it wasn't also nitro)

Try polishing it again....that was dumb to put hot plates on the table itself... you probably ruined the original polish that was on the table.... if that doesnt work, see if you can find someone to refinish it
