Tokyo Japan is the biggest city in the world with a population of 34 million people.

If you count only what is defined as the borders of the city by the government, then Mumbai is the biggest city in the world. However, this is obviously an unfair calculation, because simply by changing the size of the district under definition you can increase the population.

So they don't do that, and they take into account everything that is a part of the city, making Tokyo Japan the biggest city in the world by a long shot.

Second is Mexico City, at 22 million. Then Seoul, 22 million, New York City 21 million and then Sao Paulo, 20 million.

1 Tōkyō Tokyo Japan 34,200,000
2 Ciudad de México Mexico City Mexico 22,800,000
3 Seoul (Sŏul) Seoul South Korea 22,300,000
4 New York New York USA 21,900,000
5 São Paulo Sao Paulo Brazil 20,200,000
6 Mumbai Bombay India 19,850,000
7 Delhi Delhi India 19,700,000
8 Shanghai Shanghai China 18,150,000
9 Los Angeles Los Angeles USA 18,000,000
10 Ōsaka Osaka Japan 16,800,000

Fun fact: there are more people in Tokyo than there are in Canada. :)

Most Populous Urban Agglomerations

This is a listing of the 26 most populous cities in the world (those having a population over eight million). Data are estimates from late 2005.

All population figures for the world's largest urban areas are simply estimates. There's no way to know the exact population of such a large place. If you don't like this list, you can review Largest Cities in the World - List Two, based on different methodologies. Both lists are valid estimates.

1. Tokyo-Yokohama, Japan - 33,200,000
2. New York, United States - 17,800,000
3. Sao Paulo, Brazil - 17,700,000
4. Seoul-Incheon, South Korea - 17,500,000
5. Mexico City, Mexico - 17,400,000
6. Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto, Japan - 16,425,000
7. Manila, Philippines - 14,750,000

Well, it does depend what we are talking about here. Biggest city in miles and size? Or biggest in population and density?

I am going to say either way, The award goes to...New York City. Most populated in the USA and one of the most in the world. NY is a very large city, and so much to do.

if you include the greater metropolitan area, I believe it is Tokyo at over 35m, followed by Seoul, Korea, at over 23m. And Mexico City (pop??), Mumbai (pop??), New York (??), and Sao Paulo (brazil) at over 18m are up there, too.

I know greater Los Angeles is over 12m and I believe it is around 15th on the list.

Basically, as you would expect, most of the largest cities are in Asia (not just China and India), and in Latin America, rather than in Europe or the US, where economic and population growth are (much) slower.
