Don't buy anything that is a "want" only buy what you "need" until you get your debt paid off. Otherwise there will be no escape if you continually live above your means. Of course, if you decide to use the computer to make money, then it could become a "need", but have an action plan before you do so.

Try also to give up other "wants" for the time being such as satellite/cable television, high speed internet, etc. use a bike rather than a car. Not sure if you have a job, but if you don't work too often, find some full-time work or even make your own work providing services for others. Do not give up your "wants" completely though, give yourself a treat every now and then, but not too often. You have to have something enjoyable to look forward to.

Also, raise the money first before you buy anything. Do not put it on any sort of credit. If you put a purchase on a credit account, you will get charged interest and could end up paying hundreds of dollars more than the item is worth. That's why creditors love people so much.

A place like this can sell a good computer for about $150. Then you go and Put linux (say ubuntu) on it or buy it with Windows XP.
http://www.itxchange.com/

Check the paper as well. also friends...esp speed demons who need the best and are dumping the old.
look for something 700mhz, 20G drive, 256mb+ ram, cdrom w/ burner.

I hear there are some not bad boxes at Walmart for $300 - $400.
A standard box floats up near $600 to $800 ++ as much as you want to go.

Now these are cash up front .. but if you have bad credit .. do you want to dig in deeper. Pls do so only if necessary.

ps.
this note was written on a 300mhz box with 192 mb ram and 30G disk. Moldy, but most of the time ok. I am thinking of upgrading, but I have not. a $50 to $100 machine.

enjoy

Blue hippo will cost you 2400 for a lap top plus 99 activation fee. You need to pay them for 6 weeks before your ecieve your item (39.99 for PC and 49.99 for lap top). The only benefit from this is if they report to credit agencies.

Rent to own places are like this as well.

I could could sell you a dell gx150 1.7 GHZ for like 75.00 shipped. You just need memory.

I would build my own however. Hit up a some thrift stores etc. On big trash day people throw out computers all the time.

I just got a BP6 dual processor board off ebay for 5.00 it is only 566mhz max per processor but when you max it out with memory and run a 10k-15k rpm hard drive it is very fast. Don't ever under estimate an old computer. They key can be in your other hardware and bus speeds. I think a lot of memory is a key in most cases. For many years these companies sold these computers with like 256 mb memory or less. Most people just think the computer is a piece of cr4p when they start running more programs.

With cash from a store or an ad in the paper selling used computers.

I would suggest garage sales but I tried to give a computer away for a dollar once--monitor and all. Because I had an appointment and didn't have time to stand around outside my front door drinking lemonade; I left it with my neighbor who has a black belt in garage sales. But when I returned, I found that nobody had taken it because they didn't believe it worked! So garage sales are out as far as computers are concerned....

Save the cash,
borrow the cash,
steal the cash,
wait until your credit record improves,
get a relative or friend with a good credit record buy it and pay him the monthly payments,
alternatively you can just forget about it and use your old computer, and upgrade it cheaply i.e. use the same monitor and keybord, just buy a set of chips from ebay or something...etc to improve performance

You should return them; your conscience is already bothering you. Like you, I am an avid reader and have recently re-discovered the library what I recommend is to return them. Check the book you like and read it again a few months from now. That is what is great about the library, you can rent a book as many times as you want to. Don't worry about what others will do just keep on doing what is right. You will be better for it.
