I am glad you asked your question. I work at a community college and I work for a program called DSPS, (Disabled Students Programs and Services.) Most colleges have a DSPS department. When you start looking for a college, ask if they have programs and services for students with disabilities. Learning disabilities ARE included in that. Any mental or physical disability is ok. We have students that are dyslexic, ADD, ADHD, bipolar, different types of palseys, etc.... Most colleges do accommodate. Whether you are retarded or not, doesn't mean you can't fulfill your dreams. I have students that are go getters and over achievers and are achieving EVERYTHING they are going for. Good luck and I hope you go get everything you dream of. (I have 12 new students straight from high school this semester so YES, it is possible!!)

Well it all depends on what you can do. Can you tell time?Handel money? Read and understand the news paper? Add& subtract.
If the answer to the above questions is yes. Then you might be able to find a community collage to help you achive your dream. If the answer is no. Well don't give up on yourself you just have to work harder to learn then other people. In special ed in NY you can stay in school until your 21. Maybe more time will help.

Some people do. Some people may find it too difficult. It just depends on what you're able to do when it comes to learning college-level material.

Community colleges sometimes offer help for special needs students. You should contact a community college in your area and ask if you could talk to them. You could ask if they have any help for someone like you.

Sometimes people are told they have retardation when they really don't. Sometimes people can be mildly retarded, which means they can learn in school but it may take them a little longer to learn some things.

If you're still in high school you should ask if you could talk to someone about getting a recent evaluation that should show what abilities you have. You could ask a counselor in school about how you could go to college if that's what you want.

If you're not in high school now, you could probably get some direction about who to see or talk to from a community college.

Many people who have been in special education classes find that they have not quite learned the amount of some subjects they would need to know in order to be able to succeed in college.

There are programs that aren't college programs but that will train you for a decent job. Some of them offer certificates. A community college admissions person could tell you about those.

One time on television there was a story about a person with Down's Syndrome who graduated college. It took a real lot of work and help from people, but that person did it. So it can be done.

In answer to your question: Yes. People have done it.

It depends on how much you already know, how much you are able to learn and how long it takes you to learn things, and how much you are able to work hard. It would also help if you have the support of someone who can help you if you have difficulties.

If you were able to do ok in a community college for two years you would have then proven that you can do the work enough to probably be able to transfer to another school for two more years to get a degree. You may also want to just go for the two years and get an associates degree.

If you really have a little retardation in some area, you would probably find that trying to do college work would be very, very, hard work. If you'd like to know more about college, though, don't let that stop you from talking to people at schools and asking for their advice.

If it turns out you decide you won't try to go to college you can still learn things by getting books or tapes and learning what you can learn on your own.

You can do anything you want to do if you work hard enough.

There is money available for students with disabilities to go to college, two year colleges, and trade schools.

I would first get a copy of your school records and then find someone to sit down with you and go through them and explain the testing. then I'd look on the web and find the Rehabilitation Services for your state and make an appointment. They can provide testing and advice and even money.

Good luck!
