Pretty much anything you do on your computer causes it to use more power and therefore drain the battery. Laptops are pretty good at shutting down components when they are not in use such as sound cards and hard drives.

If you're listening to music, you're probably listening to a file on your hard drive like an MP3. Listening to it requires the hard drive to spin which drains your battery. Listening to CD requires even more power than that since the CD drive has to be running.

Now if your headphones are plugged in but there's no sound coming out of them, then there's no power being used, so there's no effect. If you're comparing listening to music through your headphones vs speakers built into you laptop, headphones will save you power. Speakers require more power to play.
