I have a new home and I want to have the backyard landscaped. What would be the best plants/flowers for this climate? I would like comething with color if possible.

I built a new house in Phoenix and lived there for 5 years. I too wanted a lush colorful yard. There are many things that are stunning:

Bougainvillea
Hibiscus
Gardenias
Oleander
Jacaranda
Lantana

There is a book published by the Sunset Garden company that is specific to southwestern plants. Can't recommend it more highly!

PS. There is the most marvelous citrus tree called a Cocktail Tree. They graft lemon, grapefruit and orange onto rootstock, so one tree produces all three fruits! If memory serves, I bought mine at Tip Top Nursery. You won't regret having one---it is a stunner and SUCH a conversation piece!

Get a look at "Western Landscaping", when living in a desert area, go native, and do not try to make your own "shangrila" oasis.
How about artificial turf? Water is limited there, isn't it?

Cactus and succulents, anything drought tolerant like lantana.
Many cacti have beautiful flowers as well.
