I believe it's D. In the first two, you need "whom", because the word you want is the direct object of the verb. So the first two are wrong. (To pick --->whom. She wanted ---->whom.)

C should be "Who", because you need the subject form of the word as the subject of the sentence. It's a l-i-t-t-l-e confusing because the subject is being expected by other persons -- but I think its use here calls for "who."

**In D, "Whom" is correct, because "whom" is the object form, and "whom" IS the object of the verb "could trust", even though it's placed before it.

(In everyday informal speech, I agree with you that A sounds fine. Technically, grammatically, it's whom, though.)

D. Always "whom" after a preposition. The preposition in this case has been omitted, but it still modifies "who" into "whom": "---not sure of whom she--."

D is correct. If you are supposed to pick two answers, than I cannot figure out why A would be incorrect, so I would pick that also, but D is correct.
