I think the healthiness of shyness depends on whether the shy person wants to be different than they are. Some people are quiet and reserved and that's OK with them. They genuinely like being that way. And if that disposition isn't problematic to their lives, I'd consider them healthy. But there are other quiet, reserved people who don't want to be that way. They want to be more sociable and expressive, but they feel to fearful and inadequate and so use shyness as an avoidance tool to cope with their anxiety. Usually, such a person will be troubled by their disposition, so I would consider them unhealthy.

Well...there are two kinds of shyness: situational shyness and dispositional shyness.
The first one happens when you deal with an uncomfortable situation that generally was not arranged, for example if you are a spectator and you are called to come upstage to perform...you feel nervous; the other one is part of someone's personality, something chronic, part of your everyday life. That would be very unhealthy in my opinion.
There is a very famous clinic in Palo Alto, CA that deals with shyness.

Shyness is neither healthy nor unhealthy. It is simply a personality trait - introvert. Many people are extrovert. There is a test called the Myers-Briggs test that gives a "type" to your personality.

Wondeful little test if you are looking for personal insight.

There is nothing wrong with shyness, however, if it affects your ability to function, it is not healthy. Otherwise, it is a normal healthy part of your personality.

It's natural, but not necessarily HEALTHY. It will stifle your social needs. That's one of the most basic and most important needs of a healthy human being. It's up there with food air and water. Without humans to talk to you, the effects on the psyche are terrible.

no shyness can never be healthy....a person can't perform well in his task or work if he is always shy..it also interferes with his psychosocial life...being a shy person can be associated with that of a loner...it's like having phobia in associating with other people.

It's just a personality trait. Some people are quiet and introverted and some are outgoing and extroverted. Then alot of people are in the middle.
