Did you people see what Mr. Jaguar just stated? All these years those racist republicans as they are told actually are responsible for passing the Civil Rights Act.

Republicans supported the bill 27-6 in the Senate (82%) and 138-34 in the House (80%) while Democrats supported the bill 46-21 in the Senate (69%) and 152-96 in the House (61%).

The New deal took place in the 1930's

A Republican freed the slaves
Republicans passed the civil rights act
a Republican nominated the first black Secretary of State and the first black women Secretary of State
Republicans support school choice which would give poor inner city black families the ability to send their children to better schools and not be stuck in the failing inner city one.

Sounds like a bunch of racists to me...

Let's dispel the notion that Lincoln was a liberal. He was very much a status quo politician in regard to the role of government and the Republican Party was, even then, a party of business and commerce, not social change. Even on the issue of slavery, Lincoln's position was moderate. He certainly did not see the black man as equal to the white man. He abhored slavery, but had the South not succeeded, his administration would not have ended slavery immediately. The more likely scenario would have been a timetable for ending it. He only issued the Emancipation Proclamation when it became evident that a statement of that sort would help bring to conclusiong the Civil War. Even then, his Proclamation did not free slaves in the border states that remained in the Union. That did not happen until after the war ended.

As for the vote for the Civil Rights Bill, yes, many Southern Democrats voted against he bill. But, the Norrthern and Western Democrats fully support it. The Southern Democratic Party was not liberal, but as conservative as the Republican Party. After the bill was passed, many Southern Democrats began to defect from the Party and become Republicans. Over the course of a number of years, many Southern states became mostly Republican, especially during Presidential election years. The per centages Jaguar gave appear to be on target.

In response to your latter comment, there was a time when the Republicans actually were THE liberal political party; Lincoln was a Republican. Things didn't start twisting around until the New Deal (FDR)...

I hoped that Wikipedia might be able to point us to the answer. But it says only, "Although majorities in both parties voted for the bill, there were notable exceptions." From the usinfo.state.gov link we can tell it passed 290-130. But I can't find an individual roll call, or a summary by party.
