each letter is actually a number, for example the numeric value 0080 is the capital "P". The standard is ASCII. To try this out, hold down your "alt" key, and with your numeric keypad, key in a four-digit number - the ones under 200 work best for this. try alt-0135: ‡ have fun! ‡‡‡‡‡‡

if your talking about computer programing type then a character value is any group of letters or numbers that are treated like letters. as in if it is numbers in a character value you cannot like add or multiply them .
