if you want to be able to use 3D features of your card, the choice of distros is rather limited; Red Hat (Fedora won't work "out of the box") and SuSE are the only distros that install easily and for which the ATI driver (pick Linux on http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html and then the 8500 or higher) has support "out of the box"

Any brand/distro will do, but either Fedora Core or Ubuntu to make the installation go as end-user as end-user should be in Windows.
