THere should be a little lock switch on the side. Slide it to "locked" position. Then it should be read only unitl you unlock it.

Are you talking about flashdrives, a portable floppy drive, or an external hard drive?

I have several flashdrives purchased over a couple of years, and an external floppy drive. One flashdrive has no external protection, another has a "lock" (which anyone can unlock), and another has the capability of requiring a password to open.

If you set a file as R/O, anyone can access properties and remove it.

If your data is highly sensitive, you might want to consider buying a portable drive that will allow you to protect it with a password.

Of course, you could just keep it in a safe place where no one else can have access to it.

Normally some of the USB drive comes with a software to lock and unlock the device. You can check at the product website for that.
