This is a breach of privacy, no different than the HIPPA rules just a different situation, I would try to consult a lawyer and find out what my rights are.

Depends on the situation. If the patient's family has a suit against the nursing home for something you did, then then they can subpoena your employment file. Only four states require the employees signature before releasing that info.

You need to elaborate a bit...
1) are you over the age of 18?
2) what relationship to you is the family member that they showed this information to?
3) What TYPE of information was actually shown?
and as a sufferer of panic attacks myself, panic attacks are not usual brought on by one circumstance; it's a lifelong illness, and something that I doubt you would be compensated for.

Cha-ching !!! I smell money ! I believe they call that breaching medical confidentiality. I work in a dental office. We cannot discuss a patient's health history within earshot of another patient. Now if you showed the same information to that patient's family it's no big deal because you're disclosing your own information. Start looking in the yellow pages for an attorney. ( I think I should get at least 2.5% of the settlement. ;) )

Absolutely this is against the law. They have no right to disclose your personnel file.. Contact the State board of employment and the licensing board to the nursing home. The employer is at fault.
No ifs and or butts

Depends on the laws in your state. I am not sure if all states have employee confidentiality laws. Was it wrong probably, was it illegal check with your labor board. If it was illiegal, you would have to prove they showed it to someone. Do you have proof? Are the people who were allegedly shown willing to state so in court? Were there any other witness in case they are not?
Even so, what was so horrible in your file that would cause you to be so upset?

I would consult a lawyer, because this is probably not a legal action on the part of your former employee. Perhaps you will never have to work again.
