My friend and I are making a hair serum which inludes maggots as the ingredients( my great aunt had a version of this serum years ago and made peoples hair grow and money!) . We have a test solution made and are about to test it on ourselves. Question is Are maggots harmful for human skin? ( they are ground up and liquified and are mixed with olive oil etc. oh and to add they were ordered from a company and packaged etc we didnt find maggots in the alley or anything like that! Thanks

maggots have been used in medicine for many many years!! infact there amazing lil bugs really. we still use them for healing wounds!! so altho it may sound gross i really dont think maggots will do u any harm what so ever!!

As an ex-hairdresser I have to say that maggots alive or dead used on skin or hair is not harmful. Live maggots are used in some hospitals to destroy infected tissue. It seems that they will eat only dead or dying tissue. The little beasties are being used in the serum to add protien, while the olive oil provides shine. One note: Protien needs to be reduced to small enough particles where it can be absorbed in the the hair. Protien attracts moisture, so unless it has been completely liquified then it will sit on the ourside of hair and pull moisture from the hair itself. Why not check with a health food store and buy a liquid protien as a more "tasteful" less gross factor to add to your serum. Remember the whole idea is to sell your product because it is good. Ask yourself, would you buy and use a product that may have been used in some Fear Factor episode?

Maggots won't hurt you in any way. You could even put a pound of live ones on your body and they won't do you any harm. They only eat dead stuff, which is why they're used in medicine to clean out gangrenous wounds and persistent bedsores. Who'd have thought?

You might want to consider that the flesh in your formula might decompose in spite of the oil. Might make mass production / marketing problematic if it has a short shelf life then makes the customer's bathroom smell like a dumpster behind a bad chinese restaurant.
