Mary Shelly wrote more than just Frankenstein. Probably a more fascinating novel was her last book called The Last Man. In the book the world's population is destroyed by a plague, however prior to this the world (or at least England) neared a golden age. The last King abdicated his thrown in 2073 which led to the formation of a republic.Tensions remained between royalist, aristocrats, and democrats until a warrior by the name of Raymond (fresh from the world's last theater of war in the Greek isles fighting the Turks) claimed the title of Lord Protector.

The author grew up amid a long list of radical thinkers who flocked around her father William Godwin. However since in the Last Man she basically kills off the human race, I don't think she had much confidence in the idea of a perfect society.
