Typically, there is a three month cycle that works like this:

Month 1 has the following options in force:

9-month options (New)
6-month options (3-months old)
3-month options (6-months old)
2-month options (1-month old)
1-month options (2-months old).

Month 2 has the following options in force:

8-month options (1-month old)
5-month options (4-months old)
3-month options (New)
2-month options (7-months old)
1-month options (2-months old)

Month 2 has the following options in force:

7-month options (2-months old)
4-month options (5-months old)
3-month options (New)
2-month options (1-month old)
1-month options (8-months old).

As options expire, new ones are created.

It's really kind of a running market....as the front months expire, the back months gain more strength, and more positions are put on and the more contract are opened up. They generally revolve around quarters and years, but a highly traded stock will have monthly contracts.
