heredity = characteristics passed to an organism from its parents via genetics.
environment = characteristics in an organism because of its exposure to variables during its lifetime.
For a while, scientists have debated whether certain traits can be attributed to heredity or environment (like clemsongoat says). Psychologists studied twins who were separated at birth, figuring since genetics were identical, any change had to be because of environment.
These days, scientists dont talk about it like its a dichotomy anymore... it's not believed that you get some things from heredity, others from environment. Like happyfarah said, they act on each other. Everything about you is a result of your genes as well as your environment and how one affects the other. They really cant be divided.

In biology, heredity refers to the transfer of biological characteristics from a parent organism to offspring, and is practically a synonym for genetics, as genes are now recognized as the carriers of biological information. In humans, defining which characteristics of a final person are due to heredity and which are due to environmental influences is often controversial especially regarding complex traits such as intelligence and race.

Genetics and the environment go hand in and hand and are always affecting eachother. The environment affects the ability of organisms living within it to survive. Meanwhile the organisms surviving affect the environment, because the environment is made up mostly of living things, and they affect eachother's ability to survive. Also, whichever organism is able to survive the environment is able to pass on its genetics to its offspring.
