Go to your local clinic. And also, ask if they offer the Nuva Ring. Its a safer, easier, AND more effective form of birth control. Its just a clear, soft plastic ring that you insert in your vagina and it stays there for three weeks. Then you remove it, have your period, and insert a new one. The risks of side effects are MUCH lower. With the pill, human error is a huge factor in its ineffectiveness, but with something you only have to worry about once a month, there is less chance of messing it up.
By the way, in regard to another persons answer, IUD's last for 5-10 years, depending on the one you want, but they can be removed at any time and are a VERY reliable form of birth control. The effectiveness of the Mirena IUD is equal to sterilization (not 100%, but still very good) Insertion and removal are only minorly uncomfortable (personal experience) and the Mirena IUD has the lowest risk of side effects of any birth control on the market. Plus, when/if you decide to have children, as soon as you get it removed (a simple office procedure) your fertility returns to 100% normal. Other birth controls can affect fertility which is a big concern for women who may want to get pregnant someday. Go to a clinic and discuss both the Nuva Ring and Mirena with them. Compared to those methods, the pill is obsolete.

The only kind of birth control that you can get without a prescription would be condoms. If you do not have insurance find the nearest Planned Parenthood clinic in your area. If you can't afford to pay them they have a sliding scale that they use on your ability to pay. They also give you your pills for free. If you wanna be brave get an IUD put in. They only have to be replaced every two to three years. I used them for birth control and was able to plan my family the way I wanted. When I was ready to get pregnant I would have it taken out. After I have my kids I had them put back in. Try to find a Planned Parenthood though you don't have to be a kid to go there and the meds are free.

You can't buy "the pill" without a prescription, and the cost depends on what kind the doctor prescribes for you(some are quite costly). You can buy condoms(male and female) and spermicidal foam over the counter. I would suggest that you call and make an appointment with your local health department's family planning (or Women's preventative health), you may be able to get contraception (including the pill) for little or no cost to you, their services are based on your income.

Pills need a prescription and cost a lot, but there are other choices. Talk to a pharmacist.

You can only purchase condoms and spermicides. Birth control is prescribed as there are many medical complicaitons with them and have to be monitored.
