E2SO4 > SO3 + E2O

(Epsom Salts) > (Sulfur Trioxide) + (DiEpsom Oxide)

If you remove the water of crystallisation from epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) by heating it, you are left with Magnesium oxide (your grey powder) and sulphur trioxide is given off as a gas.
MgSO4=MgO+SO3

Epsom salt is the common name for hydrated magnesium sulphate. MgSO4.7H2O, (not the anhydrous form). The water of crystalisation is removed by heating to form MgSO4 and then the following reaction takes place.

MgSO4 --------- MgO + SO3
