Vampires date back to antiquity. The idea of their not being reflected is new, originating in the 18th century.

The connection with mirros was a literary device to add a new twist to an old tale. An unnessary one, since vampires have been recorded as far back as Sumeria. They are obviously frightening enough to be around as long as humans, no need to embellish the myth.

this is one explanation that vampires use mirrors as portals not as something you would reflect in
The mirror world ,as you decide to call it, is like a identical copy of your world except a few differences, like its all grey toned and there are no people. Which is kinda nice considering all the problems your having with them at the moment. But at the same time, everything being in black and white is strange. Adrien explained that this is how Vampires move around during the day. They would just find a mirror, go into it, end up here then go to the place where they wanted to be and exit through a mirror here. The mirrors were kinda strange here though. Instead of being kinda silvery and shiny. They were black and dull. He also explained that this is why vampires dont have reflections in mirrors. Water, Glass, shiny rocks, in everything else they have a reflection they did just not have one in mirror, because to them they werent mirrors, they were portals. But enough about the mirror world.

Who really knows.
Vampires must truly exist. I believe they do.
There are many possible reasons, as noted by your other answers, but there might be another one.
Vampires are immortal, they never age. There is no reason for them to see their reflection if they already know what they look like, and especially if they don't have to worry about all the human weaknesses of aging and strength draining away and dying. Perhaps they can see their reflections if they wish to, and sometimes they simply "switch it off".
Another one might be the fact that vampires are stealthy creatures. I don't think that seeing one creeping up behind you in the mirror, with the intent to attack you is going to help him out much. Once again, "switching it off."
All the reasons about darkness and light, evil and good, is a bunch of hubble bubble. Oh, it all sounds very mythical and scary, but I quite frankly don't think that vampires could give a damn about that.
They are a species higher than humans. Amazing strength, breathtaking powers, and immortal. Inhuman, not inhumane.
They are better, not evil.
Just like a lion is better than an antelope or buck, not evil, just better.

I have heard the mirror is the doorway to another universe, kinda' like the "magic portal". They say that Liches can travel through mirrors by willing it and to keep a lich from coming through you have to cover it. It might be related.
another reason is that the mirror reflects the beauty of another person...or rather their soul. If a person was "undead" then the beauty of their soul was no longer in existance and therefore creates no reflection. It is also an alluded to idea that the vile vampire does not truely exist. Not to deny the fables, but that their soul does not exist and therefore wityhout a soul they do not exist.

That my dear lady is just another myth about vampires. To me it seems that people have not read anything about vampires or they would know why vampires do not like looking into a mirror. More people should spend a little more time in their local library. Yes they do cast a reflection into a mirror but it is what they see That they hate it with a passion.

This is only my opinion but I believe that vampires do exist just not the kind that are portrayed in horror movies. I think real vampires are the ones who zap your energy. Have you ever been around a person who leaves you physically and mentally exhausted? If you have, then you have met a real vampire. and they can see their reflections in a mirror

I think it's because they have no souls and therefore you can't see it reflected in a mirror. There's some religion that believe that what you see in the mirrors and photos in the soul so it might be related to that.

The myth is that mirrors are supposed to show a persons soul, and since vampires are souless, they have no soul to reflect back at them.

Becuase if they were to see their reflections, they would die again.
Did you ever hear what you see in the mirror is what you get?
If you are good, you will be happy to see your reflection in the mirror and it will complement you.
If you are devious or in dark practices, how do you expect your reflection to be.
Keep in mind the mirror works because there is light (which darkenss is opposed to), and if your soul is full of light, then you are a good person.

The usual explanation (for those who believe they can't be seen), is that they have no souls. For those who believe they can be specially harmed by silver, it is because mirrors are backed with silver. This is also why they can't be caught on film.
