I think that music from the "hippie-dippie" era was meant to be perceived differently by different people....that is why I asked.

Okay...

Mother is over protective. Nothing's going to hurt her little boy. She must make sure of that, since Daddy went across the ocean and he's never ever ever coming back.

"Pink" is asking his mother what he should do, trying to double check everything before he does it. But what does he do? He lets his mom build the protective wall around her little boy too high. No dates. No driving. None of this "rock and roll" that will make her little boy think bad things. She adds a brick for each "No" she gives poor Pink, until he's about trapped in.

The Wall is supposed to be the freakish love child of Syd Barrett and Roger Water's early lives (Drugs and shtuff to Syd, father dying in the war and shtuff to Roger). So I have no clue where the overprotective parent comes in.

according to songfacts.com:::

The movie The Wall is a semi-autobiographical story about a young boy that loses his father in the war and is raised by his overly protective mother. The child grows up alone as an outsider that absolutely does not fit in. He feels trapped by his overly protective environment while being shunned by the men around him.

Roger Waters: "If you can level one accusation at mothers, it is that they tend to protect their children too much. Too much and for too long. This isn't a portrait of my mother, although one or two of the things in there apply to her as well as to I'm sure lots of other people's mothers." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for above 2)

The answer to your question I think is best found on the movie "The Wall". I take it as a young mans lack of self-assuredness due to the smothering nature of an over-bearing mother

Its a song about a kid whos father died in war and his mother smothers him , being overly protective and the other boys make fun of him about it.

Seems pretty clear to me.
