12 - ( 4(-6) / 8 ) + 1
12 - (-24 / 8 )+ 1
12 - ( -3 ) + 1
12 + 3 + 1 = 16

The first step is to write it out as a formula:

12 - 4 * -6 / 8 + 1

Note that there are no parentheses. The wording would have been different for parentheses like: "...minus six divided by the sum of eight plus one"

The next step is to figure out what operations to do first. Conventional rules say apply multiplication and division first. So you get

12 - (4 * -6 / 8) + 1

It doesn't matter the order that you apply combinations of multiplication and division or combinations of addition and subtraction, so simply do them in order.

12 - (-24 / 8) + 1
12 - (-3) + 1
12 + 3 + 1
15 + 1
16

12 - 4*(-6 / (8+1)) = 12 + 8/3 = 44/3

If there was a "comma" after "...negative six divided by eight" then the answer would be,

12 - 4*(-6 / 8) + 1 = 12 + 3 + 1 = 16

Order of operations requires that the "sum" be completed in a certain order
1.Brackets (if any) I put the ones in above to make sense of the written sum
2.powers next eg squaring or getting the square root of numbers
3.multiplication and division are done next whichever occurs as you go ffrom left to right
4. addition or subtraction are done last but in order as they appear in the sum going from left to right

The other thing to be considered is that a negative number multiplied (or divided ) by another negative number will produce a positive number; while a positive number multiplied(or divided) by a negative number will produce a negative number.

Now to your solution. I would prefer to see the sum written mathematically rather than as you have provided it, so if my answer is not correct it is because it is very important how the original question was presented and whether there were brackets (which I suspect there was).

(12-(4x-6))/(8+1)

= ( 12 -(-24))/9

= (12+24)/9

= 36/9

= 4

12- 4*(-6)/8 +1

depends if there are parenthisis around any of the equations, the answer will vary.

in the general context, remember PEMDAS

in this case: 12-4*(-6)/8+1 = 12 + 24/8+1 = 12 + 3 +1 = 16

The way I was always taught the order of ops is PEMDAS or (parenthesis)(Exponents)(Multiplication and Division) (Addition and Subtraction) work from left to right no exceptions, with each set of parenthesis as a single order. this you be 12-4*-6/8+1...boy I don't like the way that's worded, too much wiggle room, but ok, this means multiplication first, 4*6/8=3 then 12-3+1=10...that's the answer for the equation I got using the equation I interpereted it as, but that's hardly relevant, just remember PEMDAS and you'll be good.

you should translate the words into math:

12-4*(-6)/8+1

I don't know whether there is order of operations here, but i will assume there is..

multiplacation and division from left to right is the first step:
=12+24/8+1
=12+3+1

next, addition and subtraction from left to right

=15+1
=16

12-4(-6)/8+1

first you have to solve what's in teh parenthesis:
12+24/8+1
them you add the things that need to be added:
36/9
and then you divide:
4

12-(4*-6)/(8)+1=12-(-24/8)+1=12--3+1=12+3+1=16

It could be so many different things.

12 minus (four times (negative six divided by (eight plus one)))
OR
12 minus (four times (negative six divided by eight) plus one)
OR
(12 minus four) times (negative six divided by (eight plus one))
OR
(12 minus four) times (negative (six divided by eight) plus one)

And there are others.
