granite is verry pourous and it probably depends on what kind of stain.
diferent solutions for diferent stains .
organic stains can sometimes be removed with lemon juice the acid bleaches them. Or bleach but bleach only worls on organic like food or mold.
Rust stains may need to be sanded out and need to resand entire surface to get back to looking perfect. "sanding is better left to pro's"

if you want to try it yourself,
i would reccommend going to a home improvement center or tile shop and purchasing one of their cleaners,do not sand it,since it will ruin the finish, many stains come out easily with poultices made of powder or flour mixed with acetone or hydrogen peroxide, but it depends on what caused your stain,if i were you i would call a marble retailer and tell them what kind of stain i had and get a reccomendation of what would be the best method.
