which way should a headstone face,towards the graves so you stand at the foot to read it?or turned around?

In the cemetary here you have to be in front of the grave to read the stone and I've seen some that you stand at the foot of the grave to read it.Is there a correct way to face it?

It should be placed so that you read it when you stand at the foot of the grave.

The tombstones are suppose to face the east.
