It depends on where you live. Every country/state has a certifiying body that you can check. For US check out www. aao.org. You can also ask referrals from your GP or Family Physician. Also from your insurance co because they only usually accredit certified doctors.

Intense eye pain may be what is called an eye migraine, and may not have anything to do with the eye at all. Ask her if her vision changed (like black and white spots or a geometric pattern clouding her vision for 5-15 minutes). If so, this may be a sign she needs to be checked for high insulin (hyperinsulinemia) or low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). www.hufa.org has some basic info on low blood sugar, including a list of symptoms that can also be due to that condition.

If you have a medical school nearby-- they may be affiliated with a specialist Eye Institute-- The eye doc if he just checks eyes for vision problems and prescribes glasses may not have the knowledge. Agree with most of the other answers-- but my eyes are very precious to me-- I'll go for the knowledge and make sure it isn't REALLY serious--
I give you all the luck I can-- and some prayers, too.

If your concern is that serious I would reccommend taking her to an opthomologist rather than an optomotrist. Opthmologists have been through medical school and done several years of post doctoral training. You can find a board certified opthmologist through their societies web site linked below.

definitely get another opinion but stay in the same field. Call her insurance company for their list, call the state accrediting organization, etc. to find the proper referral. Also, pick up the phone book, there are many good doctors out there.

Could be sinusitus or blockage of sinus drainage-check ent doctors. Mensch17 cant even spell Ophthalmologist correctly. Maybe he should see an optometrist, or just stop giving advice. Best.
