Take if from this fellow NYS'er I wont say mum.... oh wait I just did. Easiest and cheapest and will hold up in light frost but lack of sunlight by Mid november does them in and everything else for that matter. Darn! Can't get around that lack of sunlight!

Chrysanthemums
Asters
Sedum varieties...Autumn Joy, Frosty Morn, Black Jack, Matrona, Jaws, Autumn Fire
Black Eyed Susans
Late Blooming hostas
Hardy Hibiscus
Salvia
Reblooming Daylilies
Agastache (Hyssop)

You also might want to consider late blooming shrubs like Rose of Sharon. And for color in the spring...plant your tulips, crocus, daffodils and hyacinths now.
