Authors can use any cheap laptop, since they use only Word. But consider this. If you are getting older, you might consider getting one with a BIG SCREEN. You can also get one with a full size keyboard, where the keys are not crammed together. Personally, I would use a desktop in a separate OFFICE, so I get some seclusion. With a desktop, you can get a much larger screen.
But for laptops, I recommend Toshiba. These are well build mechanically, so the mouse does not move by just the weight of your wrists. Some are terrible, like the Dell Notebooks. If you do not see a Toshiba with a large enough screen, then look at the HPs. Visit Costco, WalMart and Staples to see both. OH, but those darn BACK TO SCHOOL MOMs probably bought them all out in the last few weeks. Let's hope that they stock up for Columbus Day.
Of course, with the Large laptop screen, you also get a heavier machine. Be careful with that. Don't forget that drug users love to steal laptops, since they can be turned into CASH. Laptops are the NUMBER ONE Stolen item in America.

Every author most likely has a personal favorite laptop computer, due to one reason or another. Some people don't need much, and want a very simple, light-weight laptop, while others wish for a faster, heavier option. Besides the physical hardware, some people are limited to certain prices which they must stay within, which may force them to a get a lower model laptop which wasn't their first choice.
My suggestion would be to get a Tablet laptop, so you could doodle around, or dry out situations, jot notes quickly, or use it to simply type. You probably shouldn't need more than 512MB of RAM at the most for all of this; 256MB of RAM would work fine. (Though if you do wish to play games and stuff you'd most likely want to get a very expensive laptop with 1GB+ of RAM and excellent graphic cards.)

If your only intention is to write with this laptop, any laptop that can run a word processor is good. I would recommend a Dell if you're looking for the some of the least expensive laptops out there, though if you're looking for anything better, Lenovo makes some pretty awesome stuff. The easiest-to-use laptop you could get is the MacBook, which is slightly more expensive than some of the cheapest ones you could buy. It starts at around $1100, which is the price of an average laptop, but, if your only intention is to write, get something cheaper.

I've had a Sony for years. Never liked it. Why do people like Sony? I bought one because of name. I'm not that knowledgable about computers though so may be just me.
