Toothpaste can polish metals, especially silver, to remove tarnish. It doesn't do anything for nicks, gouges, or rust.

You have to use ordinary paste toothpaste that has no additional ingredients, i.e. no baking soda, peroxide, whiteners, gel forms, etc... Buy a cheap white paste.

To polish:
1. Use a clean lint-free cotton cloth, an old sock will do the trick.
2. Hold the cloth under cool water until it's damp. Wring out any excess water.
3. Squeeze a pea sized drop of the paste onto the area covering your fingers.
4. Apply the toothpaste in an up and down motion, not circular, until the tarnish is gone.
5. Use a small twisted corner of the cloth to clean small areas, like under a stone or in grooves.
6. Rinse the jewelry well until all polish is gone and the water runs clear.
7. Pat dry with a soft clean cloth, don't rub.

Yes, use a toothbrush and the amt of toothpaste as if you were brushing your teeth. Just brush it on until it's clean and rinse.
