So how do you feel about this issue? Do you think that dresscodes in your school are fair? Did you have to change the way that you dress because of the dress code? Have you ever got in trouble for dying your hair with Kool-aid in order to get a cool color? If so, how did that make you feel. If not -- do you have friends that do things like this?

A persuasive essay (letter) is trying to get someone to see your side of an issue. Don't be afraid to state it the way you feel it -- but make sure that you back your statements/opinions up with material which would make the principal (or whoever you are writing to) start to see your side. If you are not for dress codes, look at the school policy and see if there are area in the dress code that might be negotiated.... for example shirts showing belly buttons stay "out" but hair coloring is re-negotiated back to being ok (if you give a logical argument on why it should be ok).

Your teacher isn't asking you to argue for a side you don't agree on, she/he is giving you the option to choose the side.

To prepare for your essay
Take a paper and write at the top your position (I am against the dress code because....... or I am for the dress code because......

then draw a line down the center of the paper.

Write Reasons I think it should/should not be in our school on one side

Write why I believe this -- and then for each reason -- write things you have observed, or experienced which made you form an opinion of your reason.

Then, look at what you have, and start to write a letter on a fresh piece of paper, using your list to help you form your beliefs.

Good luck

Dear Principle,

I am writing to respectfully ask you to reconsider our school's dress code. I know that our current dress code has been implemented to prevent any style of clothing that would detract from our education. I believe in this principle: as long as one's dress does not detract from education, it should be allowed. If it does bring disruption to the classroom, then it should be curtailed. I would argue that baggy pants have become an accepted norm in American youth culture. There is no longer any shock value or curiosity that arises from the modern unkepmt look. Therefore, it no longer detracts from the education process. On this basis, I appeal to you to modify our dress code to allow this. I do not believe that the school would need to compromise her principles at all and I believe that it would be a true encouragement to the student body.

Yours truly,
A sincere internet plagiarist

How do YOU actually feel about the dress code? Do you think somethings are unfair? Usually dress codes are based on these criteria: Does it provide a distraction? Is it unsafe? Is it profane? Then you get down to the tasteful question.

For example - why are girls allowed to wear earrings and boys are not? That is a taste question.

Hope it helps - but sorry - you have to do the work, because I don't know what your school's dress code is. Good luck.

What you need to do is find an opinion or a statement and defend it, it can be ridiculous, but as long as you can defend it- you will get a good grade. Like the following.
Dear Principle Whiner,
I believe that establishing a dress code violates the principles of the students civil rights that allow them to right to freedom of expression, and their right to pursue happiness.

You can't be ******* serious. You expect us to write your whole essay for you. Thats a nice try. If you reworded it carefully to make people believe that you actually wrote it adn ask for help on how to expand it a little more, people might be more likely to help you but you will get no help if you want us to write the whole essay for you.
