Mendeleev aranged the elements on basis on increasing atomic weight, placing them in rows and columns with each row beginning with elemnt with 1 valency ending with inert gas element. Propeties of elements in a group (columns) show similaritiess.

Come on people; the first table he worked out was basically properties of elements that grouped them together. As more work was done on masses, Mendeleev refined his table.

He put it as a table with valence across the top (columns) and increasing atomic weight going down (rows).

The interesting thing is that he discovered it was PERIODIC and that there were corresponding differences in properties in going from row to row

he arranged it in order of increasing atomic mass, unlike todays table which is arranged by increasing atomic number
